| Endometriosis is a condition in women. This medical condition is caused when the endometrial cells are producing outside of the woman's uterus instead of inside where they belong. These cells are commonly expelled every month during a woman’s menstrual cycle. When these cells attach themselves to the tissue that is on the outside of the uterus they are referred to as endometriosis implants. Doctors might be able to find these implants on the woman’s fallopian tubes, ovaries, on pelvis, the outer side of the uterus, or intestines. While rare it is feasible for doctors to also find them on the cervix, vagina, and bladder. The endometrial cells can stimulate tough symptoms and other health conditions in a woman - but they are not cancerous. Physicians will attempt to diagnose endometriosis dependent on the symptoms that the woman feels during the exam. They will ordinarily perform a rectovaginal examination. During this examination the doctor will put one finger in the vagina and the other in the rectum. Through this process the physician will be able to to search for and feel the endometrial implants that may be placed on the uterus or along the wall of the pelvis. While the exam and the endometriosis symptoms help the physician to come to the correct conclusion they are not always trustworthy. Because of this they might advise the use of an ultrasound - which will rule out any diagnosing of pelvic diseases and may be efficient to see endometrial cells that are on the bladder or vagina. The most correct method of diagnosing endometriosis is to examine the inside of the woman’s abdomen and pelvis and to biopsy the tissue of the endometriosis implants that they might find. This involves surgery in which the operating surgeon will open the stomach employing a large incision laparoscopy or a small incision laparoscopy. Laparoscopy is more standard because it is the a simpler procedure that can be done when the patient is under general or local anesthesia. Also the patient will commonly be able to go home the same day of the procedure. At times the biopsies that are collected during the procedure may help to diagnose endometriosis even if there are no visible endometrial implants seen by the surgeon. |
