In 1853, Engwall started this trading company in Gavle, Sweden. Many people agreed with Engwall that his imported coffees were the best in the world. As the history of Gevalia continues to grow and surpass expectations 150 years later, the Royal Court of Sweden also continues to drink Gevalia. Gevalia has sought out, blended and roasted the most tasteful coffees offered anywhere in the world. Exclusive Master Taster, Willy Pettersson, has given Gevalia 40 years of expert coffee tasting service. Willy Pettersson provides his expertise at the original Gevalia factory in Gavle, Sweden as well as his dedication to search the world for the best coffee beans, giving Sweden continued enjoyment in the beverage. After several years, Gevalia has been able to provide this perfectly balanced tasting line of coffees to mostly Sweden, Denmark, the Baltic area as well as America. Gevalia coffee uses only the finest beans found throughout the world which Willy Pettersson uses to provide an exact science of measurement and extensive testing to determine which beans meet the high standards of Gevalia. This philosophy of Gevalia, to use the finest farm grown beans, combined with royal patronage makes Gevalia quite unique in its heritage. It all begins with farming of the beans whereby every Master Taster of Gevalia has individually tested each hand-picked bean to provide the best combination of taste and quality. The growers are responsible to be knowledgeable about the growing seasons so the same taste is used each year. One blend of coffee can contain up to seven or eight different beans and it is imperative that the Master Taster secures the same quality of beans in each batch produced. Willy Pettersson has nurtured close relationships with the farmers for decades, even to the point that Willy is personally kept informed regarding the farmer's children and even grand children as well as their families. This personal touch provides the history of Gevalia with such a unique view to product growth and stability. In Kona, Hawaii, the climate provides sun in the morning, rain in the afternoon and cool evenings which is an excellent combination for a successful bean crop. Kona Coffee, being the most desired and expensive coffees throughout the world, is grown on the slopes of Mount Hualalau and Mauna Loa. The growth is limited to only 3,000 acres on both the North and South districts of Kona due to the land grant by Princess Bernice in the late 19th century. These 3,000 acres are considered to be quite generously provided and in turn, it provides a high quality unique coffee bean. In February and March, the coffee trees bloom showing beautiful white flowers, also known as "Kona Snow." By April, the green berries arrive which turn into a red berry by late August, ripe for harvesting continually throughout the year until January. The farmers pick the berries by hand then run them through a coffee pulper to separate the two beans found in each cherry. They are then fermented, rinsed, and dried in the sun. The dried green beans are ready for roasting within generally two weeks. In 1971, General Foods purchased Gevalia Coffee. As of 1983, Gevalia began offering mail ordering of their coffees which eventually turned to online ordering. Gevalia has offered 40 kinds of great quality coffees and teas since February 2007, still enjoyed by the Royal Court of Sweden. Gevalia has since started producing their various flavors into coffee disc. These amazing little discs have bar codes on them and when used in approved makers brews a single cup of perfect coffee. |
