Anabolic steroids ( AS) or  anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are  synthetic substances related to   androgens or  male hormones  specifically testosterone.  Anabolic steroids stimulates or controls the development and maintenance of  male  sexual characteristics. These include  growth of the vocal cords and  body hair. Anabolic steroids   fuel muscle growth by increasing protein synthesis within cells .  
 
These drugs are   prescribed and used legally  to treat certain conditions  that result from deficiencies in steroid hormones. In delayed  male puberty, anabolic steroids are used to stimulate bone growth and appetite and to induce development of male characteristics. These kind of drug is also used to treat chronic wasting of body tissues due to illnesses  such as AIDS and cancer. It  has  been established that   anabolic steroids can facilitate   increase in body weight  along with proper diet and  exercise.

Infertility , reduced sperm count,  baldness, shrinking of testicles , development of breasts  and increased risk of prostate cancer are  found in men who continuously use this kind of drug. For women,  changes in menstrual cycle , male-pattern baldness, growth of facial hair, enlargement of clitoris, deepened voice  are some of the adverse effects.  Adolescents who take anabolic steroids also risk  stunted growth and premature  skeletal development. Some individuals use it because they perceive its use will improve their appearance, in which case it almost becomes an addiction. 
 
The use of anabolic steroids in sports like body building for ergogenic  purpose  has long been a controversial  issue because they provide enhanced performance for the athletes with the potential to gain unfair  advantage against the competition. Athletes  use them to gain weight, power, speed, endurance, power and ferociousness. In sports such as weight lifting, track and field, and football, the use of steroids are very popular.    The use of this substance is considered doping and  is prohibited  by all major sporting bodies. Abuse of steroids , research shows,  may lead to psychiatric dysfunction. Many users report feeling good about themselves while   on the  said drug, but mood swings can lead  to manic-like  symptoms which can lead to violence. 
 
Despite the controversy surrounding  the use of anabolic steroids, which is mainly on account of abuse of this  drug,   anabolic steroids are  important drugs that  help people tide over   health problems. Doctors and medical practitioners prescribe legal anabolic steroids for people suffering from different ailments which may include  some typical cases of anemia and  for the  relief of discomfort for some cancer patients.
